Favorite Super Bowl Ads

Sure, the game was exciting (or devastating, if you’re a Falcons fan…), but you know that at least half of the viewers out there were in it for the ads. Why is it that on Super Bowl Sunday, something that is usually inconvenient and fast-forwardable competes with the main event? We look at 3 of our favorite Super Bowl ads from this year to discuss why these commercials kept us glued to the couch between plays.

Takeaways from Our Favorite Super Bowl Ads

John Malkovich’s Domain

We obviously loved this one. See our recent blog post on the topic of buying your domain name before it’s too late! Beyond the topic, though, this one works because it has a recognizable actor, a beautiful assistant, and a good dose of humor.

Melissa McCarthy as Kia Eco-Warrier

Melissa McCarthy had an exciting weekend. First, she played White House press secretary Sean Spicer in a gender-bending, gum-chewing performance that went viral. Then she starred in one of our very favorite Super Bowl ads (and definite favorite of all the 6-year-old boys out there). This one convincingly argues that driving a Kia is an easy way to be earth-friendly. We’re convinced: we would take the Kia over an angry rhino any day.

Mr. Clean Fantasy

In this video, Mr. Clean appears in all his white-garbed, muscular glory to the delight of a frazzled woman. The concept is funny as it is, but the surprise ending is even better. This one does a great job of hitting its target market – women (and men) who just want cleaning to be a little more enjoyable.

Runners Up

We also loved the military commercial that aired at the end of the game. It was heartwarming and made the whole family take notice. The 84 Lumber commercial was slightly controversial, but it did a great job of building interest. So much interest that the website crashed because so many people went online to find out what happened next.

The final lesson? Our favorite Super Bowl ads were ones that caused either laughter or tears. If you want to make a big impact, go for that emotional reaction!
