Why Is Media Training Necessary for Organizations of All Sizes?

Media training may seem like an unnecessary line item for many organizations, and in fact many have never even considered holding a media training for their staff and leadership.  However, it is not only an investment in education, it is imperative for protecting your organization’s reputation, and navigating unwanted media attention.  While it may seem like one of the instances where “it could never happen to us”, it very well could.  Here are some of the reasons media training is imperative.

  • The 24 Hour News Cycle Has Changed the Game.  Reporters are always looking for stories, and in the current climate, controversies or improprieties at all levels are fair game for coverage.  Whether it’s someone on your team getting a DUI, or whispers of financial issues, reporters can pick up on these things and run with stories.  It is vital that your organization has a plan in place, and at the very least is not afraid to speak to the media.  It is also important to understand how to not look like you are running from the media, because this is automatically taken as non-transparency.

  • Your Reputation is Everything.  Social media, Google reviews, Glassdoor and other sites have caused a lot of issues with reputation among your customers, potential employees and yes, reporters too.  If you do in fact have an issue that could cause potential negative press, navigating that successfully is key, and media training can help you understand how that navigation works.  Understanding how and when to comment can help you protect your reputation.

  • Perception Matters. The old adage is true; perception determines reality.  If you find yourselves in a negative media storm, it is important to understand how to manage it so that you are in control of the narrative as much as possible.  It will matter in the long run, as will rehabilitation of your image moving forward.
